Learn to Lead Trad Climbing –

One Day Course 30th May 2026

Location Windgather Rocks Derbyshire

£240 for Two People.

Ready to take the sharp end? This intensive one-day course is designed for climbers looking to progress from seconding routes to confidently leading traditional climbs on real rock.

Under the guidance of a qualified instructor, you’ll develop the core skills needed to lead safely and efficiently. The day focuses on building both your technical ability and mental confidence, giving you a solid foundation to begin leading trad routes independently.

Throughout the day, you’ll cover:

  • Selecting and placing traditional protection (nuts, cams, hexes)
  • Assessing gear placements and building trust in your protection
  • Constructing safe, solid belays and anchors
  • Rope management and efficient movement on lead
  • Route reading, risk assessment, and decision-making
  • Managing fear and developing a strong “lead head”

Expect a hands-on, practical day at the crag, with plenty of climbing and personalised coaching. You’ll have the opportunity to lead routes under close supervision, receive real-time feedback, and refine your technique in a supportive environment.

Who is it for?
This course is ideal for climbers who:

  • Have prior outdoor climbing experience (e.g. seconding trad routes)
  • Are comfortable belaying
  • Want to transition into leading traditional climbs

By the end of the day, you’ll have a clear understanding of the lead process and the confidence to start leading easy trad routes with supervision, setting you up for further progress.
